The general opinion was that this economic crisis, difficult life of citizens, along with total chaos and lack of ideas in the country, would draw attention from the dried out ideas of Pan-Serbism. This did not happen, because there are always those competent for this job. Pan-Serbism dressed itself in the story of Serbia as the home state of all Serbs in the region, as the current Law on Diaspora calls it, in the attempt to rename Milosevic’s ambition of uniting all Serbs in one state, calmly, in accordance with the policy of “peaceful and diplomatic means”. The Church still openly adheres to the standpoint that Milosevic’s ideas and “testamentary thoughts” are as alive and healthy as they were in the past. Except that only the state “thoughts” have hidden themselves and are more modestly dressed, with the nationalistic Law on Diaspora that has been passed. This law introduces the Council of all Serbs in the Region, presided by Serbian president Tadic himself. A meeting of the Council of all Serbs in the Region was held a few days ago in the President’s cabinet.
However, the meeting of the Council of all Serbs in the Region was not accidentally held exactly at this moment – it was high time for action. The idea is to prepare Serbs for the censuses which will be held in the neighboring countries in April. This event, especially the census in Montenegro, is very important for our top government leadership. The government and church leadership of Serbia has been campaigning in Montenegro for some time in order to persuade as many Montenegrin citizens as possible to declare themselves as Serbs, with the hope that this will result in the disappearance of that “artificial” state without a nation, which was, allegedly, invented by Milovan Djilas, just to spite Serbs. If someone is wondering why are there 57 billion dinars for special purposes in the budget of Serbia (last year, a somewhat smaller sum was spent, 42 billion) without anyone knowing what this actually means – now we know. These funds are spent, among other things, on the political and church campaign in the eve of the census in Montenegro. Serbia is paying for citizens of Montenegro to declare themselves as Serbs, in order to revive Serbism in that country.
And now, to be very specific, the campaign in Podgorica is led by Mladjen Djordjevic, an important person from the Cabinet of the Serbian President, who is entrusted with the most delicate tasks. There are rumors that, ten days before the census, our President will be making a short visit to Montenegro, in order to attend the opening of our consulate in Herceg Novi. Why would the President of our country come to the opening of a consulate, even if we know what the idea behind the visit is? It is almost indecent for a president of a state to visit another state on such a pitiable occasion as a consulate opening, while the real reason is something as important as the flourishing of Serbs in Montenegro. The excuse for the visit is humiliating, and the campaign will bring no benefit (except for reminding us of the “Serbian pipedreams”). Namely, Montenegrins will declare themselves nationally as they want. Only a neglected brain could devise such an evil plan – to produce, in Montenegro, as many Serbs as it is possible. And here, in Serbia, they couldn’t care less about Serbs: Serbs are pounding nails into their own hands, cutting of their fingers, they are dying from hunger and unemployment. However, the motto is: “if only the neighbor’s cow would die” and that we have more Serbs in Montenegro than ever before. If Serbs cannot flourish in Serbia, at least they will be able to flourish in Montenegro.
If someone thought that the state and church leadership, as well as behind the scenes advocates of the national cause have given up on the destructive ideas of Pan-Serbism, and that large sums of money are no longer allocated for this purpose, then that person has made a grave mistake. They never went to sleep, they are always standing guard. Sometimes they take a little nap, and we start hoping that we are moving forward. But when they wake up, they, once again, start yelling – Stop!
