Appeals to Serbian ambassador in London

Trustees of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) are so concerned about the dismissal of Mr Sreten Ugričić, Director of the National Library of Serbia, that they have written to the Serbian ambassador in London asking him to use his influence to reinstate Mr Ugričić.

Mr Ugričić is held in great respect by his colleagues nationally and internationally for his commitment to democracy and the right to freedom of speech. These principals are valued and shared across the world by library and information professionals.

CILIP President Phil Bradley said, “This dismissal appears to be politically motivated and a reaction to Mr Ugričić’s public appeal to protect freedom of thought and expression. I am shocked and saddened by this decision. On behalf of all CILIP members I am calling on the Serbian Ambassador to exert his influence and do all he can to reverse the decision.”

Mr. Ugricić has recently held several important positions at an international level including the Co-President of the Selection Board of the World Digital Library, Administrative Board of The European Library, Administrative Board of the Electronic Information for Libraries Consortium, Administrative Board of the Conference of European National Libraries, European Ethical Working Group and Next Page Foundation.
