To ignore or get concerned?

This is the Tanjug news report on Aleksandar Vucic from September 6, 2013, published under the title: “I am in a hurry, I know how I’ll soon meet my end”.

First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that he feels responsibility towards his country and citizens, and that he wants to finish up as much as he can because he knows how he will meet his end.

He added that this was the reason why he is in such a hurry.

Answering journalists’ questions in regard to resistance which will be encountered in the announced economic and overall reform, Vucic said that he feels responsible, and added: “I know how I will meet my end, I know my people very well. I know myself, my people, and I love my people more than anything. That is why I know how I will meet my end.”

He said that this was the reason why he wants to finish as much work as possible, so that in 10,15 or 20 years it will be said that someone did something.

“I am in such a hurry because I know it is drawing close”, Vucic said.

What is the meaning of such a statement? It has several standpoints – let’s look at them separately:

1. The first standpoint is that the First Deputy Prime Minister feels responsible towards his country and citizens, which is a positive thing, but is also a duty of every person who accepts a leading government position. However, in the very next standpoint, responsibility towards the country and its citizens is reduced to the responsibility towards his own people.

2. He knows the people very well, and loves them more than anything. Knowing the people comes from knowing himself, as if this knowledge is one and the same. Equating oneself with the people confirms that Vucic does not mean that his people are all the citizens, but solely the Serbian people.

3. Knowing himself and the Serbian people leads him to a surprising conclusion that he will meet his end at the hand of his people, whom he loves and knows so well. “Meet his end” obviously signifies his death. Vucic even knows how he will meet his end, but does not disclose it. But why meet his end by the hand of the people, when he loves the people, and the people love him?

4. The First Deputy Prime Minister says that he is in a great hurry with economic and overall reforms, because he knows his end draws near, i.e. his death. At the same time, he does not demonstrate this hurry, since observers come to the opposite impression, that the government and Vucic himself are not in a hurry; he has missed carrying out those big reforms during his first year, the reconstruction lasted too long, there were no indications of being in a hurry. On the contrary, the impression was that things were dragged out, as if time is not expensive for Serbia.

5. Since he knows he “will meet his end”, he wants to finish as much work as possible, in order to be praised, that is, “so that in 10,15 or 20 years someone will be able to say that someone did something”. From this we can conclude that he, personally, wants to be remembered – “for doing something”, or, since he uses the pronoun someone, he means that someone will be remembered for doing something after all, since nobody has done anything. Thus, only him.

Is this a classical example of depression, preceded by grandiosity and megalomaniac plans? And then he sinks into depression, in which he foresees his own death?  What does this have to do with the people, at whose hand he will meet his end? None whatsoever.
